Sustainable Santa Fe: Making Strides for Water Conservation

Santa Fe, the city is in the midst of a two year project that will install new meters for approximately 34,000 customers. It is estimated there will be 4,000 meter exchanges per month until completion. Once the project is completed, the City will be able to more efficiently manage the water system and provide you with better customer service. The meters will be automated and will not increase your monthly bill. The system is intended to allow the City to better manage operating costs and keep your water rates as low as possible.

Did you know that the city has a new sustainable building tax credit program? This will reduce the amount per square foot a homebuilder or homebuyer receives- per home- from a maximum $9/ft2 to $6.50 and limits the eligible size per home at 2000 square feet. Water conserving features are now required: each home must have indoor plumbing fixtures and water-using appliances which must have specific average flow rates. It also requires a water line that can be connected to a drip irrigation system in the front and back of a residence in any potential landscaping areas.
